GENEVA (IDN) \u2013 Biram Dah Abeid, a descendant of former slaves who has been called \u201cthe Nelson Mandela of Mauritania\u201d, and Shaparak Shajarizadeh<\/a>, a prominent Iranian women\u2019s rights activist have been honoured for their courage to fight gross violations of human rights<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Abeid, founder of the Initiative for the Resurgence of the Abolitionist Movement (IRA), has mobilized tens of thousands of Mauritanians to protest slavery and the government\u2019s failure to apply anti-slavery laws.\u00a0JAPANESE\u00a0<\/a>|\u00a0TAGALOG<\/a>\u00a0|\u00a0THAI<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Experts Concerned About the State of Children<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

GENEVA (IDN) \u2014A landmark report focuses on the health and future of children and adolescents worldwide who are under immediate threat from ecological degradation, climate change and exploitative marketing practices that push heavily processed fast food, sugary drinks, alcohol and tobacco at children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

BERLIN | TOKYO (IDN) \u2013 An eminent Buddhist philosopher and nuclear disarmament advocate has tabled four critical initiatives to \u201ccontribute to the creation of a sustainable global society where all can live with dignity and a sense of security\u201d. The initiatives cover four major areas: building support for the\u00a0Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW)<\/a>; multilateral negotiations for nuclear disarmament; climate change and disaster risk reduction (DRR); and education for children in crisis.\u00a0JAPANESE\u00a0<\/a>|\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
