As demand for these transition minerals is skyrocketing, increased mining threatens Indigenous rights and territories where there is not a comprehensive assessment of risks and harms to Indigenous Peoples, and complete participation of Indigenous Peoples who are impacted.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In order to solve the growing climate emergency, a true&nbsp;<a Transition<\/a>&nbsp;to a low carbon economy requires governments and companies involved in the new green economy to observe and implement the rights of Indigenous Peoples enshrined in the&nbsp;United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, including the right to&nbsp;Free, Prior and Informed Consent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a and the&nbsp;<a for Threatened Peoples<\/a>&nbsp;have launched the SIRGE Coalition as a platform to champion a Just Transition to a low-carbon economy. SIRGE Coalition is calling upon government, corporate, and financial decision-makers to avoid the mistakes and harms of past resource development by protecting the rights and self-determination of Indigenous Peoples around the globe, many of whom live on lands rich in transition minerals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A few of many examples of Indigenous Peoples currently experiencing harms and threats from unconsented development of transition minerals include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/click.agilitypr.delivery\/ls\/click?upn=2x9DuPzTUZCJo6jkFvzDZDBTorso-2F0Wz-2FkNDnWV4bqXhhEJaVgIdeXRzrBxK-2B2q7VxdzRpV3Pr17IiSVOmiH23gO-2BsZ-2BSLS2AU0ZzoSj77J7ckVnJzLtuH4QKUP1OysMXCRjWn3yzv7KcpCvUmzNyiC3Wh4DAg-2FihfiZlbXuggWjOhn5Bsk2ESEh3h-2BWd3-2BazXxL_j-2Bp3vu0IZh9MNPQNQYTw6YxvpMMZpegV-2BESsdVbzBV8wtw9wBI6LnXAVZs-2F-2FTrpkmia1fdSEu4zAb8oCPxc5bgqEGwAa86sLS5YVCaNiGuD-2B6-2BoWdS1Ol6MLAEN-2F30WfDiawqep5b3xH-2Bcov-2B-2Bt8OXLpG8-2FMGR1MGzGpSIyjj9OCm6m5fRG-2BEkaYlq6sInv2qIya2D6L-2B-2BCcu6OaI5SUIShuPepks9XS2iyH8ovfRNIwhhEX-2Fdt4t2u-2FvvvFOq0vq5mc3Rmi9HpWEgi-2BCOMPAymKXHEWYncso-2BN3UT4Rs66YEwVOD2xIfwYh9hYlADw0yhBLHPUg7N4WV02Ds7IXN-2BF4GwHQiTxNIIJGTcpaRxDQRJmTnAbMhXioFJsQ8JwXfFPy6dA3iZdydXVZu2HyLb2p7a7ehJZByFvVuUXm0wdaRuuGmdsR8uon0TcMq5tbJvh7QtwIFq6KrEvUFVBtwXgtYh8MfdzFSeVcwWxOfUM-3D\">Peehee Mu\u2019huh<\/a>, or Thacker Pass, sits at the southern edge of the McDermitt Caldera in Humboldt County, Nevada. Lithium Americas is attempting to develop a lithium mine on these lands, which are sacred to Shoshone and Paiute Peoples.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Guatemala, members of the&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/click.agilitypr.delivery\/ls\/click?upn=2x9DuPzTUZCJo6jkFvzDZDBTorso-2F0Wz-2FkNDnWV4bqXhhEJaVgIdeXRzrBxK-2B2q7VxdzRpV3Pr17IiSVOmiH23gO-2BsZ-2BSLS2AU0ZzoSj77JFqd-2BVGTVEEUqfZr6bIAVpoMPCCD11bcU7rSVbGraTKN9ErdVtQ-2F5iKVGxaBSkCMrvZkwT4sGS6T2zhBdEH7F0Ocxj_j-2Bp3vu0IZh9MNPQNQYTw6YxvpMMZpegV-2BESsdVbzBV8wtw9wBI6LnXAVZs-2F-2FTrpkmia1fdSEu4zAb8oCPxc5bgqEGwAa86sLS5YVCaNiGuD-2B6-2BoWdS1Ol6MLAEN-2F30WfDiawqep5b3xH-2Bcov-2B-2Bt8OXLpG8-2FMGR1MGzGpSIyjj9OCm6m5fRG-2BEkaYlq6sInv2qIya2D6L-2B-2BCcu6OaI5SUIShuPepks9XS2iyH8ovfRNIwhhEX-2Fdt4t2u-2FvvvFOq0vq5mc3Rmi9HpWEgi-2BCOMPAymKXHEWYncso-2BN3UT4Rs64TDIH-2FWeFYQEpZHeeV32H2DQHI-2FwJvbYJjqH8xJiL6sgyKbSOKX1ef0BhXRlZPdSstOtBxg2YOqKniY4HGNhAOPn9-2FBzm6pwRGINl-2FfDMWjjc4KOiOMOoC12LFDfLse-2FHmEt-2BqZi2SRKmz4T-2FN64fbUcWm6aNMgeJPcWnn1Wa-2B2y9WLfvVVtpcis0PIfukfVQ-3D\">Indigenous Q\u2019eqchi\u2019<\/a>&nbsp;community peacefully blockaded the Fenix Nickel Mine to protest the lack of consultations and Free, Prior, and Informed Consent for the mine, which has polluted their traditional fishing grounds in Lake Izabal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Russia,&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/click.agilitypr.delivery\/ls\/click?upn=2x9DuPzTUZCJo6jkFvzDZDBTorso-2F0Wz-2FkNDnWV4bqXhhEJaVgIdeXRzrBxK-2B2q7VxdzRpV3Pr17IiSVOmiH23gO-2BsZ-2BSLS2AU0ZzoSj77LnSG3M21fH7KJXyjdBF0ScuNtYKPinH2xEHddZI5Jzn85zlnouEBjVQeKLPR7-2BFP-2ByWA-2B36NAeuQTqQ7G572Ilcj_v_j-2Bp3vu0IZh9MNPQNQYTw6YxvpMMZpegV-2BESsdVbzBV8wtw9wBI6LnXAVZs-2F-2FTrpkmia1fdSEu4zAb8oCPxc5bgqEGwAa86sLS5YVCaNiGuD-2B6-2BoWdS1Ol6MLAEN-2F30WfDiawqep5b3xH-2Bcov-2B-2Bt8OXLpG8-2FMGR1MGzGpSIyjj9OCm6m5fRG-2BEkaYlq6sInv2qIya2D6L-2B-2BCcu6OaI5SUIShuPepks9XS2iyH8ovfRNIwhhEX-2Fdt4t2u-2FvvvFOq0vq5mc3Rmi9HpWEgi-2BCOMPAymKXHEWYncso-2BN3UT4Rs65-2F5e45vj1ti93STHLxO95boGlNB0IA0lW7Th72DfUKe993unDEzJFVD-2F2lGCxtXrRu8qOOJ-2B2oP2Zd-2BeDh9D-2F42KdLjSksllhBxEmnqpc2mkZZxGMNCMObUsG9mDvraN0VUkiet7hkQMy7zFroywxQgKO5u256N62E8RC8er5Orhn6uyLt7swloe5ZqfUzsrw-3D\">Indigenous communities<\/a>&nbsp;on the Taimyr Peninsula suffered food insecurity after a fuel spill in 2020 from a subsidiary of Nornickel\u2014a mining firm that supplies some 20 per cent of the world\u2019s Class I nickel needed for electric vehicle batteries\u2014polluted local waterways. Despite pressure from companies in the supply chain, Nornickel has failed to respond to requests from Indigenous communities for adequate compensation and restoration of the fragile Arctic environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Indigenous territories contain significant concentrations of untapped heavy metal reserves around the world. In the United States, a&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/click.agilitypr.delivery\/ls\/click?upn=2x9DuPzTUZCJo6jkFvzDZNb4fkKd9Mw5DAPkW4Rw2gvcobXGsAdUtNwHXsil5coY6DOnoZmQJtOrh6qU42Gi3HkTJa89W1YYfYoBYzKfxvsW2WugI1feC4UZqz6GAcNjiOpq_j-2Bp3vu0IZh9MNPQNQYTw6YxvpMMZpegV-2BESsdVbzBV8wtw9wBI6LnXAVZs-2F-2FTrpkmia1fdSEu4zAb8oCPxc5bgqEGwAa86sLS5YVCaNiGuD-2B6-2BoWdS1Ol6MLAEN-2F30WfDiawqep5b3xH-2Bcov-2B-2Bt8OXLpG8-2FMGR1MGzGpSIyjj9OCm6m5fRG-2BEkaYlq6sInv2qIya2D6L-2B-2BCcu6OaI5SUIShuPepks9XS2iyH8ovfRNIwhhEX-2Fdt4t2u-2FvvvFOq0vq5mc3Rmi9HpWEgi-2BCOMPAymKXHEWYncso-2BN3UT4Rs666PD1EGrDAynJP-2F5G3ifArYmEAnbqoC2qFy-2BilrE-2FnL-2Bp8pgE2gvq4FJMrax2b-2FrREU70oHRQrE-2Fcc4JzjCE3cjl9fV21QdIEd4dUP2mV87uGplxrDNPr4ldUzcf9h781yDrFC7G6e9z1ES3ZuiO92WLaC36ybYyAvq0MyvRWT-2BURJt-2BxxcnPVe8gKfKVawFk-3D\">study by MSCI<\/a>&nbsp;estimated that 97 per cent of nickel, 89 per cent of copper, 79 per cent of lithium, and 68 per cent of cobalt reserves and resources are located within 35 miles of Native American reservations. A&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/click.agilitypr.delivery\/ls\/click?upn=2x9DuPzTUZCJo6jkFvzDZAeSOmtKFhU3-2FkpDyBh4GUNh8GzNOcSGeQVUdCL22vO-2FajgB7oPz76GhsvUMcekFlQ-3D-3DZLeG_j-2Bp3vu0IZh9MNPQNQYTw6YxvpMMZpegV-2BESsdVbzBV8wtw9wBI6LnXAVZs-2F-2FTrpkmia1fdSEu4zAb8oCPxc5bgqEGwAa86sLS5YVCaNiGuD-2B6-2BoWdS1Ol6MLAEN-2F30WfDiawqep5b3xH-2Bcov-2B-2Bt8OXLpG8-2FMGR1MGzGpSIyjj9OCm6m5fRG-2BEkaYlq6sInv2qIya2D6L-2B-2BCcu6OaI5SUIShuPepks9XS2iyH8ovfRNIwhhEX-2Fdt4t2u-2FvvvFOq0vq5mc3Rmi9HpWEgi-2BCOMPAymKXHEWYncso-2BN3UT4Rs66warjHtNOiueyCiuvCMVh8uWm7SMkDq-2BwnEgj9xuPUnOiKGickny4IhkL6w-2B6EoBZU-2BkEyEMCmke2cDLiGgTcz-2Fqj6QqReBrgG4Qc-2FsY2s76ZH0HlcJJDqfv1aKlLkOzEq5qZtucFP-2FB7dtjAN9itPG8KULoGgx-2Bv0RZyEtDqVM3MW7OEN-2FknKCBC4r2Vm1nc-3D\">2020 study<\/a>&nbsp;found that mining potentially influences 50 million square kilometres of Earth\u2019s land surface, with 8 per cent coinciding with Protected Areas, 7 per cent with Key Biodiversity Areas, and 16 per cent with Remaining Wilderness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>About the SIRGE Coalition<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The SIRGE Coalition\u2019s primary goal is to elevate Indigenous leadership through the creation of a broad coalition and the promotion of constructive dialogue. In accordance with the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/development\/desa\/indigenouspeoples\/declaration-on-the-rights-of-indigenous-peoples.html\">United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP)<\/a>, the coalition will uphold all rights of Indigenous Peoples, including their cultures, spiritual traditions, histories, and especially their rights to determine their own priorities as to their lands, territories, and resources. Indigenous leadership is essential as Indigenous Peoples conserve about 80 per cent of the planet\u2019s remaining biodiversity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The SIRGE Coalition is staffed by an Executive Committee made up of representatives from each organization and is governed by an Indigenous Steering Committee made up of two representatives of Indigenous Peoples from each of the seven socio-cultural regions across the globe along with a global chairperson and the chairperson of the Executive Committee, chosen from Indigenous members.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>SIRGE Coalition is calling for full implementation of the UNDRIP, including the right to Free, Prior and Informed Consent, in all endeavours related to the extraction, mining, production, consumption, sale and recycling of transition and rare earth minerals around the world.
