New York City:<\/em><\/strong> In bitter cold that plunged into the low 20s Fahrenheit, Zohran Mamdani was sworn in Thursday as New York City\u2019s 112th mayor, sealing a dramatic political ascent that upended the city\u2019s establishment and placed a self-described democratic socialist at the helm of the nation\u2019s largest city.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Wrapped in heavy coats and scarves, tens of thousands of supporters crowded the streets around City Hall on New Year\u2019s Day, enduring below-freezing temperatures for an inauguration that blended formal ceremony with the energy of a street rally. Music echoed through Lower Manhattan as attendees stamped their feet for warmth, waved signs and cheered as Mamdani pledged an assertive new era for City Hall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBeginning today, we will govern expansively and audaciously,\u201d Mamdani told the crowd, his breath visible in the icy air. \u201cWe may not always succeed, but never will we be accused of lacking the courage to try.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At 34, Mamdani becomes the first Muslim and the first person of South Asian descent to lead New York City. He was ceremonially sworn in on the steps of City Hall by Sen. Bernie Sanders<\/strong>, following an introduction by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez<\/strong>. Mamdani had officially taken the oath shortly after midnight in a smaller, private ceremony with family members present.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A rally-like inauguration in the cold<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Despite the frigid weather, the public ceremony unfolded more like a mass political rally than a traditional inauguration. Supporters danced to a soundtrack that mixed Jay-Z, Daddy Yankee, Bollywood hits and \u201cNew York, New York,\u201d as city and borough flags snapped sharply in the wind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some attendees wore knit caps and jackets emblazoned with slogans such as \u201cTax the Rich,\u201d reflecting Mamdani\u2019s proposal to raise revenue by increasing taxes on wealthy New Yorkers and corporations. Handmade signs and neon placards dotted the crowd, underscoring the movement-style campaign that propelled him to victory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mamdani\u2019s rise stunned political observers. In 2025, he defeated former Gov. Andrew Cuomo in the Democratic primary and went on to win the general election, reshaping the mayoral race around affordability, housing and public services at a moment of deep economic anxiety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Progressive agenda draws national attention<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

In his inaugural address, Mamdani acknowledged that his administration would be closely watched far beyond city limits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Supporters say those proposals are long overdue in a city grappling with soaring rents and living costs. Critics argue the plans are fiscally risky as New York faces multibillion-dollar budget gaps in the coming years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sanders urged New Yorkers to remain engaged beyond inauguration day, saying Mamdani\u2019s agenda was not radical but necessary. \u201cIn the richest country in the history of the world, making sure people can live in affordable housing is not radical,\u201d Sanders said, drawing chants of \u201ctax the rich\u201d from the crowd as temperatures remained well below freezing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Faith and symbolism at center stage<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Mamdani\u2019s Muslim faith featured prominently during the ceremonies. He took his oath on Qurans that belonged to family members, while Imam Khalid Latif delivered an invocation alongside representatives from multiple faith traditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNever let him forget that this office exists to serve the people, not to rise above them,\u201d Latif said in his prayer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ocasio-Cortez, a fellow democratic socialist, praised Mamdani\u2019s focus on working-class New Yorkers, calling him \u201ca mayor for all of us\u201d and framing his victory as a rejection of \u201cbigotry and extreme inequality.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Challenges ahead<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Mamdani succeeds former Mayor Eric Adams, whose single term was overshadowed by corruption investigations and internal turmoil. Adams attended the ceremony, standing quietly in the cold as his successor addressed the crowd.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The new mayor now faces the task of translating campaign promises into policy while confronting a difficult fiscal landscape, housing shortages and pressure on social services. His first preliminary budget, expected later this month, will offer an early test of how he plans to balance ambition with financial constraints.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
