The History of Bukhara

During the Arab conquest, Bukhara became one of the Islamic world’s centers and emerged as the scholarly and cultural capital of the East. In the medieval period, the Bukhara Emirate was established here, becoming a steadfast fortress of governance for a long time. This land played a significant role in the recognition of great scholars worldwide, including Imam Bukhari, Ibn Sina, Narshakhi, Naqshbandi, and Gijduvani. Their works became treasures of the world’s intellectual heritage. In particular, Imam Bukhari’s compilation Sahih al-Bukhari and other works, along with Abu Ali Ibn Sina’s The Canon of Medicine, are acknowledged as gems of both Islamic and global scholarship.

The people of Bukhara have exemplified tolerance since ancient times. Christians and Jews, who were persecuted elsewhere, found refuge on this land. Located on the Great Silk Road, the city has long been a home to representatives of many nations who lived here in harmony. In the 15th century, Bukhara’s financiers engaged in currency exchange for over 20 countries.
