アシクバエフ氏は、カザフスタンがユーラシア大陸の真ん中に位置する交易の十字路として多様な文化や宗教を受け入れてきた歴史的背景（人口１９００万人、国内に１３０のエスニックグループ、１８の宗派、３７１５の宗教団体が共存する多文化社会）を指摘したうえで、宗教的寛容が忘れ去られつつあるこの重要な時期に、「信仰と善意をもつあらゆる人々」に対して連帯を呼びかけ、「地球上の平和と調和を実現する」よう求めるこの会議の意義を説明した。事実、同会議が諸宗教・文明間の対話と理解の促進に果たした重要な貢献については、２００４年の国連決議A/RES/59/23でも認知されており、国連総会第６２回会期は、世界伝統宗教リーダー会議の勧告に従って、２０１０年を「文化の和解のための国際年」とすることを決議している。
Katsuhiro Asagiri, President of INPS Japan, covered the Congress of Leaders of World and Traditional Religions, which Kazakhstan, a Central Asian country, has hosted every three years since 2003. During the congress, he and Ramesh Jaura, Editor-in-Chief of IDN, interviewed Yerzhan Ashikbayev, Deputy Foreign Minister of the host country.

Ashikbayev pointed to Kazakhstan’s historical background as a crossroads of trade at the heart of the Eurasian continent, where diverse cultures and religions have long been accepted. He noted that the country is a multicultural society of 19 million people, home to 130 ethnic groups, 18 denominations, and 3,715 religious organizations. Against this backdrop, he explained the significance of the congress at a critical time when religious tolerance is increasingly being forgotten. The congress, he said, calls on “all people of faith and goodwill” to stand in solidarity and work to “achieve peace and harmony on Earth.”
Indeed, the important contribution made by the congress to promoting dialogue and understanding among religions and civilizations was recognized in United Nations General Assembly resolution A/RES/59/23 of 2004. In addition, at its sixty-second session, the UN General Assembly, following a recommendation of the Congress of Leaders of World and Traditional Religions, decided to proclaim 2010 the International Year for the Rapprochement of Cultures.
